AGRIGENTO CITY
Agrigento, defined by the Greek poet Pindaro in the 5th century bC as “the most beautiful city of the mortals”, is known for being the home of the playwright and Nobel Prize winner, Luigi Pirandello. It lies on two hills overlooking the Valley of the Temples, in the south west of Sicily, on the southern coast. To the south it overlooks the Sicilian Channel while to the west it borders on the Province of Trapani, to the west with the Province of Palermo and to the north-east with the Province of Caltanissetta. It's known as the City of Temples for the expanse of Doric Temples of the ancient Greek town, set in the so-called valley of Temples, included, in 1997, in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city of Agrigento holds many interesting events during the year such as the "flowering almond festival" during which two important international folklore festivals are held, the first conceived by Prof. Enzo Lauretta and the second, known as the international "Children of the World" festival, conceived by Giovanni Di Maida and Claudio Criscenzo.
