Campobasso is situated on the slopes of a mountain of calcareous rock at the foot of which is a fertile plain. Because of heavy traffic the town has spread down the hill to the plain expanding mostly to the south with wide straight roads and ample squares. The monuments of importance are the castle of Cola di Monforte, the church of S. Bartolomeo from XVII century. Facing the castle is the Franciscan convent where Padre Pio was a guest and the Romanesque Church of San Giorgio, patron saint of the city.
