COSENZA CITY

 
Cosenza is a provincial capital and lies at 238 metres asl. It has ancient origins and among it’s historic buildings the most important are the norman castle, the Cathedral built in the XIII centuryand the church of S. Craterica from the XV century. The Accademy of Cosenza is very famous, founded in the XVI century it became a seat of learning during the Reign of the Two Sicilies. Cosenza is also identified as the Athens of Calabria because of its cultural past, the Academy Cosentina, for example, is the second of the Kingdom of Naples and one of the earliest academies founded in Europe. Still remains a city where art and culture well sink their roots, not the case in October of 2008 was recognized as a city of art from the Calabria region of a resolution aimed at highlighting the historical and artistic heritage of the city, with important impacts on the commercial (pride and joy of town) and tourism in the territory. On 12 October 2011, the Cathedral of Cosenza has been declared by UNESCO "heritage witnessed a culture of peace and" this is the first award given by the organization in Calabria.
