Gorizia lies at 84 metres above sea level on the right bank of the river Isonzo, on the Slovenian border. In spite of its history of having undergone heavy destruction during the World Wars, many sights have been preserved such as the Duomo of 1684, the Baroque church of Sant‘Ignazio and an imposing castle.In 1945 it was put under the Allied administration and returned to Italy even if its suburbs were assigned to Yugoslavia.
