Grosseto lies in the heart of the famous Maremma area, along the Ombrone river. The old walls surrounding the city centre are certainly worth a visit. Not far away is the church of San Francesco (Saint Frances) with it’s sober interior and beautiful crucifix, attributed to the young Duccio di Buoninsegna. The cathedral was however built by the lesser known architect Sozzo di Rustichino between the 13th and 14th centuries who possibly carried out the superb decorations on the right portal.
