Macerata lies on a hill at 315 meters above sea level, from the north it looks onto the valley of the river Potenza and from the south that of the river Chienti. The city has an old historic centre surrounded by walls, Whereas the new part has been built on the hillside facing the plains. It’s University, where one can find the Facolty of Law and the Accademy of the “Catenati” is very famous. The roman influence can even now be clearly seen in the numerous ruins and several buildings.The church of Santa Maria della Porta and the Porta Montana are from medieval times.
