Matera is located in the south-east of the Basilicata. To the east the province of Matera faces the Ionian Sea, to the north it borders on Puglia (province of Bari and province of Taranto), to the west with the province of Potenza and to the south with Calabria (province of Cosenza). The city of Matera lies 401 meters above sea level, covering two valleys, separated by an outcrop, known as Il Sasso, where the beautiful cathedral is located.
