Ragusa lies in a hilly area in the south east of Sicily and is divided into two parts; Ragusa Inferiore (Low) and Ragusa Superiore (High). Ragusa Inferiore is of medieval origin but after being destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 was subsequently rebuilt giving it the 18th century aspect that is prevalent. Ragusa Superiore has however an absolutely modern aspect.
