Savona is the regional capital and is located at 4 metres above sea level on the Riviera di Ponente. The old part of the city is crossed by small and narrow winding streets concentrating around the old dockyard. Surrounding this historic centre the new city has grown up with its wide, straight roads. The city has a prevalently 19th century look to it, though its Old Town dates from the late medieval period. Among its historical and artistic monuments, the most important of which must be its Duomo, built between 1589 and 1604.
