SULMONA CITY
Sulmona is a town in the province of Aquila in Abruzzo. It was awarded the decoration of Military Valour for the War of Liberation, given the Silver Medal for the sacrifice of it's inhabitants and for it's activity in the partisan struggle during the second world war. Set in the heart of Abruzzo, near the Majella National Park, Sulmona is famous for it's centuries old tradition of the production of sugared almonds. But not only sugared almonds, among the sweets: also handmade nougat, traditional biscuits, Christmas cakes and Easter specialities and the queen of cakes, the Cassata of Sulmona, made with sponge cake, cream and nut brittle. The gastronomy of Sulmona uses vegetable produce of the Peligna Valley, fertile earth appreciated by Plinio: among which red garlic of Sulmona, an ancient and traditional cultivation, a unique product in Italy, for the wine-red colour of the skin as well as it's intense flavour.
