Taranto lies at 15 meters asl on the most internal northern part of the huge Gulf of Taranto and is made up of three parts: to the north is the commercial port area, at the center, on an island, the old town center, and to the south the new quarters. These three urban centers which are joined by bridges, one of which is a swing bridge, divide the Mare Piccolo (little Sea), a vast inland basin, from the sea. Here the remains of the Acropoli are to be found.
