Trento is both the regional and provincial capital and is a mountainous basin at exactly 194 metres above sea level. It is packed with artistic and historical sights that include the Gothic-Romanesque Duomo which was the seat of the Council of Trent. Dating from the thirteenth century are the Palazzo Pretorio, the Torre Vanga, and the marvellous castle of Buonconsiglio, inside of which are located the Museo Provinciale d‘Arte and the Museo del Risorgimento.
