VERONA CITY

Verona lies along the banks of the river Adige in the western part of the region of Veneto. It dates back to ancient times and in 89 BC it became a Roman colony. There are many examples of architecture from this period such as the Gavi Arch, the splendid Arena, the Borsari Gate and the theatre. Other buildings worth a visit are the church of San Zeno Maggiore from the 5th century, rebuilt between the 12th and 14th centuries and the two churches dedicated to San Fermo from the 11th and 12th centuries as well as the cathedral. From Medieval times are the Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori.
