LAKE ANGITOLA
Lake Angitola or Lake of the Angitola is an artificial lake in the province of Vibo Valentia, in the territory of the borough of Maierato. The lake covers an area of about 1.96 sq.km. and lies at the extreme south of the bay of Sant'Eufemia, about 3 km from the sea (Costa degli Dei). It was created in 1966 by damming the river Angitola from which it takes it's name. In 1975 the area round the lake was recognised as a nature oasis and entrusted to the management of the WWF Calabria. From 1985 it was designated a wetland of international importance. The area of the lake, while not being contiguous to it, lies in the perimeter of the Serre Regional Nature Park. Furthermore Lake Angitola and the Dunes of Angitola are two sites of Community interest recognized by the Ministry for the Environment. Round the lake there are mainly olive groves and Mediterranean "macchia" (typical vegetation). There's also a belt of reforestation of Aleppo pines. On the banks of the lake there are examples of cottonwood, cattail reeds, willow, alder, eucalyptus and cork oak.
