For administrative reasons Lake Trasimeno belongs to Umbria but geographically and culturally it also belongs to Tuscany as it has the characteristics of both. It lies in an area where the border between the regions is undefined. It is located right in the middle of Italy next to the route which from ancient times led pilgrims from northern and central Europe to Rome. In the area of the lake are the towns of Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve, Magione, Paciano, Panicale, Passignano, Piegaro and Tuoro.
