Campo Imperatore is a vast plateau of glacial and carsic-alluvial origins, located at about 1800m altitude in the province of Aquila in the territory belonging to the boroughs of Barisciano, Calascio, Castel del Monte, L'Aquila and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, in the heart of the Gran Sasso d'Italia massif and within the confines of the Gran Sasso and Monti del lago National park. Campo Imperatore is a ski resort, the first to be created in the Apennines and among the highest. The skiing facilities cover the most western part of the plateau, between the vale of the Fontari and Mount Scindarella and comprise 3 ski lifts as well as a total of 15 km for Alpine skiing and over 60km for Nordic skiing. It also has a snowpark for snowboarding with half-pipe and boarder cross runs and a track for cross-country skiing. The resort is linked to valley by the Gran Sasso cable car and has a car-park and other skiing facilities at Fonte Cerreto. It is also combined with the other skiing resorts of Campo Felice and Ovindoli.
