ISARCO VALLEY
The Isarco Valley (Eisacktal in German, Val dl Isarch in Ladino) is one of the two main valleys of Alto Adige, stretching from the source of the Isaco river at Brennero to the mouth of the Adige river at Bolzano. The river of the same name runs through the 80km long Isarco Valley and comprises the towns of Bressanone, Chiusa and Ponte Gardena (Vipiteno lies in the valley but is part of the Wipptal district). From an orographic point of view the valley separates the eastern Retiche Alps (Stubai Alps and Sarentine Alps) from the western Tauri Alps (Zillertal Alps) and from the Dolomites. For historical and cultural reasons the true Isarco Valley is the area south of Fortezza. The upper valley of Isarco is called Wipptal and constitutes a district in it's own right. The geographical valley is subdivided into three comprensorial communites: Isarco Valley, Wipptal and Salto-Sciliar (Salten-Schlern). The principal town of the Isarco Valley district and main center of the geographic valley is Bressanone.
