TIBERINA VALLEY - TUSCANY
The Valtiberina (or Val Tiberina) is a valley that begins in Romagna and unfolds between Tuscany and Umbria, parallel to the Casentino and with the upper course of the river Tiber (springing from Mount Fumaiolo in Emila-Romagna) running through it. Strictly speaking the Valtiberina refers to the wide river basin of the river Tiber that stretches from Montedoglio to Santa Lucia, south of Città del Castello, but commonly the name is a synonym for the Upper Tiber Valley. The Valtiberina is closed off to the west by the Alpe di Catenaia and to the east by the Alpe della Luna. Often the valley is divided into the Tuscan Valtiberina and the Umbrian Valtiberina, as a result of the division created in the valley in the Middle Ages between 1385 and 1441.
