ZINGARO NATURE RESERVE

The Zingaro Nature Reserve is managed by the regional agency for State Forests. The Zingaro coast is one of the few parts of the Sicilian coastline unspoilt by the presence of a coastal road. The reserve stretches along the western side of the Bay of Castellammare and the San Vito Lo Capo peninsular that overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea between Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani. The territory lies for the main part in the borough of San Vito Lo Capo and to a lesser extent in the borough of Castellammare; it stretches for 7km along the coast and covers an area of about 1,700 acres of completely unspoilt nature. The coast is made up of quaternary calcarenites and limestone reliefs of Mesozoic dolomitic nature with cliffs reaching a height of 913 m. (Mount Speziale) that slope steeply down to the sea, interspersed with numerous small bays. Within the reserve there are the Nature Museum, the Marine Activity Museum, the Rural Life Museum, the Manna Museum, the Center for Environmental Education, two picnic areas and old rural buildings used as refuges.
