CILENTO
The Cilento, or western Lucania, is a mountainous sub-region of the province of Salerno extending like apeninsular between the bays of Salerno and Policastro, in the southern part of the region, declared a World Heritage Site. Up until the creation of the Cilento and Vale of Diano National Park the Cilento area was identified with the towns at the foot of Monte della Stella (1131 m) and others dilimited to the east by the river Alento. On objective grounds the Cilento has been extended over most of the coastal and southern internal part of Salerno. In ancient times the CIlento was part of Lucania (together with the Vale of Diano and the bay of Policastro). Signs still remain in the dialect, the gastronomic traditions and the geography (Vallo of Lucania, Atena Lucana).
