EOLIE ISLANDS

The Eolie Islands form an archipelago of volcanic origin, located in the Tyhrrenian Sea, in the province of Messina, off the northern coast of Sicily. Two of the islands, Stromboli and Vulcano are home to volcanos as well as various secondary volcanic phenomenon. The Eolie islands form an archipelago made up of seven islands, to which are added islets and reefs emerging from the sea. The 7 islands are arranged in the form of a horizontal Y, off the northern coast of Sicily, facing the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina. They are visible in great part from the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily when the visibility is good and there's no mist. The seven islands are: Alicudi, Filicudi, Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Stromboli and Vulcano. In 2000 the Eolie were nominated World Heritage Site by UNESCO for the volcanic phenomena.
