LAMPEDUSA ISLAND

Lampedusa is the largest island of the Pelagie archipelago, in the Mediterranean sea. With an area of 20 sq km it is the sixth in size of the Sicilian islands. Geologically it belongs to Africa and together with Pantelleria it is nearer to Tunisia than to the Italy and lies just 113 km from the African coast. Lampedusa is the most southern, inhabited area of the Italian state. Connections are guaranteed all year round from Lampedusa Airport to Palermo and Catania. As these are necessary services for the islanders of Lampedusa, they can take advantage of reduced fares. During the summer season tour operators organise charter flights from the main Italian cities. A film festival, "Il Vento del Nord" is held on Lampedusa every year and is organised by Massimo Ciavarro and Laura Delli Colli.
