LIPARI ISLAND

The Island of Lipari is mainly mountainous and has a rugged coastline. The highest points are Mount Chirica and Mount Sant'Angelo. The communities on the island are: Pianoconte, Quattropani, Acquacalda and Canneto. The island of Lipari is of vulcanic origin which is evident in the Muria Valley with it's red rocks and the north eastern coast covered with a vast flow of pumice stone. It's part of the borough of Lipari together with the other Eolie islands, except the island of Salina whose territory is subdivided between the boroughs of  Santa Marina Salina, Malfa and Leni. In ancient times it was already known as Lipari. The main street of Lipari is the Corso Vittorio Emanuele, known simply by the locals as "Il Corso". However, the most characteristic and historically popular street is Via Garibaldi, next to the "Corso". Narrow and with lots of lanes that make it truly fascinating, via Garibaldi connects the castle with the "Marina Corta" square. Another important street is Via Francesco Crispi known by the locals as "Marina Lunga", which is actually the seafront promenade of Lipari Center that leads to Canneto.
