MARETTIMO ISLAND

The highest of the Egadi islands, Marettimo is the jewel of this archipelago and the perfect place for nature lovers. Here you can explore caves, scuba dive in this marine paradise or appreciate the archaeological aspect of this fascinating island. There is something for everyone who wants to get away from the noise and smog of the city. It is the westernmost of the Egadi islands and the village of Marettimo, part of the borough of Favignana, is found there. Marettimo became detached from the mainland many thousands of years before the other two islands of the archipelago. The result is that there are many endemic plants, such as the Egadi Cabbage and the Boccone fennel, a bush that grows on the cliffs around the Semaforo. The various caves are really worth a visit, accessable only from the sea, as are the karstic phenomena; the sea bed, some of which is part of the Egadi Nature Reserve. The highest point of the island is Mount Falcone (686 m). The island is crossed by a lots of pathways.
