SALINA ISLAND

Salina is the second largest island of the Eolie group and like Lipari is of volcanic origin. It has two mountains, Fossa dei Porri and Fossa delle Felci, that are the highest on these islands. The sea is a wonderful shade of blue and so clear you can see to great depths around the island. There are only a few beaches composed of pebbles such as Pollara. Salina is the most fertile of the Eolie islands and is rich in water; vineyards are cultivated for the precious grapes from which the sweet flavoured "Malvasia delle Lipari" wine is produced and also capers, exported world wide. Another important resource for the island is tourism. In 1980 the Salina Regional Park was founded and in 1981 the Two Mountains Nature Reserve. It was the set for the film "Il Postino" (1994), the last film starring the actor Massimo Troisi . From 2007 it's the setting for the SalinaDocFest, international narrative documentary festival.
