SAN PIETRO ISLAND
The island of San Pietro is one of the two main islands of the Sulcis archipelago, located off the Sulcis peninsular in the south western part of Sardinia. It covers an area of 51 sq.km (sixth largest Italian island) and has about 6,500 inhabitants mainly concentrated in the area of Carloforte, the only town on the island. Along the western and northern coast there are caves, inlets, cliffs and natural pools with various small beaches. The western coastline has steep cliffs dropping down to the sea and is dominated by the Capo Sandalo lighthouse and beacon. The eastern coast, where you'll find the harbour town of Carloforte, is low, flat and sandy. Off the north eastern coast lie two small islands, belonging to the borough of Carloforte; the small island of Ratti and the wide Piana Island, where the largest tuna fish factory in Sardinia once stood, now transformed into a residential and holiday village.
