CAMPANIA

It is a region of peninsular Italy with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the south and to the west and is administratively divided into the provinces of Avellino, Caserta, Naples and Salerno. Naples is the capital of the region. The Campania can be divided into two distinct zones. The inland part is made up of the mountain ranges of the Appenino Campano and the Appenino Lucano, whereas on the coastal part there are a few isolated groups of mountains and hills. Naples, one of the oldest cities in Europe with it's 2700 years of history, holds the record of being the city with the largest historic centre and is the regional capital. The other main towns of the province are Avellino, Benevento, Caserta and Salerno. Campania is the region of Italy with the greatest number of assets included in a World Heritage Site (14) and together with Tuscany and after Lombardia, that divides one with Piemonte and one with neighboring Switzerland, is the region of Italy with the greatest number of World Heritage Sites (6 in a total of 45).
