SICILY

Sicily is the largest of the mediterranean islands and together with the archipelagos and minor islands of Ustica, Egadi, Pelagie, Pantelleria, Eolie and Lipari make up an autonomous region with a special statute. This beautiful island is divided from the Italian peninsular by the three kilometer wide Straits of Messina. These straits are famous for strong currents and whirlpools where, according to the Greek poet Homer, Ulysses faced the monstrous Scilla and Cariddi. The territory of Sicily also comprises various islands and archipelagos, such as the archipelago of the seven Eolie Islands and Ustica to the north, the three Egadi Islands to the west, while to the south, Pantelleria and the Pelagie Islands. There are also other smaller islands such as the islands of Stagnone. In the centre of Sicily the city of Enna lies at an altitude of 949 metres in the Erei mountains while in the south east, between the provinces of Ragusa and Siracusa, you'll find the Iblei mountains.
