The region of Tuscany is located in central Italy and its territory is defined by the western slopes of the Apennines, comprising the islands of the Tuscan archipelago and overlooking the sea in its west and south-western slopes. It is bordered by the regions of Liguria to the north-west, Emilia-Romagna to the north, Marche and Umbria to the east and Lazio to the south-east. The regional capital is Florence, while the other provincial capitals are: Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Massa-Carrara, Prato, Pistoia, Pisa and Siena. In Tuscany there are plains along the coast as well as inland. The coastal area comprises the plains of Versilia, the last stretch of the lower Valdarno and the Maremma while inland the main plain is that of Valdarno which stretches from east to west along the river Arno, comprising the cities of Arezzo, Florence and Pisa. Other inland plains are between the mountains and comprise the cities of Florence, Prato and Pistoia, the Plain of Lucca, the Valdinievole, the Valdera, the Valdelsa, the Val di Chiana, the Val di Cecina, the Val di Cornia, the Val di Pecora, the Val d'Orcia, the Valle dell'Ombrone, the Val di Bisenzio and the Valdambra.
