Sicily

Sicily is the largest of the mediterranean islands and together with the archipelagos and minor islands of Ustica, Egadi, Pelagie, Pantelleria, Eolie and Lipari make up an autonomous region with a special statute. This beautiful island is divided from the Italian peninsular by the three kilometer wide Straits of Messina. These straits are famous for strong currents and whirlpools where, according to the Greek poet Homer, Ulysses faced the monstrous Scilla and Cariddi.
